KATHMANDU, May 17, 2004-Chinese authorities have released two popular Tibetan musicians two months after detaining them, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports. Relatives of Namkha, a Tibetan singer, and Bokocha, a monk and composer, have said the men weren't mistreated in custody.

Authorities in China have banned followers of a prominent Tibetan Buddhist lama from traveling to his monastery to pay their last respects after Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok's sudden death after heart surgery, RFA's Tibetan service reports. The monk's local followers have one week in which to pay respects at what remains of his Buddhist institute in Sichuan Province, which was largely razed by Chinese security officers in 2001 as the popularity of its founder soared.

WASHINGTON, Oct 3, 2003-A young Tibetan political prisoner known for boldly signing his own name to posters calling for Tibetan independence has died in hospital in an historically Tibetan area of Sichuan Province, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.
Nyima Drakpa, a monk in his late 20s, died at 4 a.m. local time Oct. 2 in Dawu (in Chinese, Daofu) County, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 8--Four Tibetans detained in Nepal were returned to Chinese authorities despite Nepal's promise to no longer forcefully return Tibetan refugees to China, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.
"This is clearly a violation of a pledge made by the Nepalese foreign secretary to the U.S. Senate during his recent visit to the U.S. that Nepal will not forcefully return any Tibetan refugees to the Chinese authorities," said one source who spoke to RFA on condition of anonymity.

CHINA RELEASES SOME TIBETAN ASYLUM-SEEKERS

WASHINGTON, July 25, 2003--Chinese authorities have released eight of 18 Tibetan asylum-seekers forcibly repatriated from Nepal in May, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports. Sources who spoke on condition of anonymity said the remaining 10 would-be refugees are expected to be released soon.
Their release comes earlier than expected. Chinese authorities told RFA in June that most of the group would be held for three months of re-education in Shigatse. One said the adults in the group could face criminal charges.
